And a very full day it was!
After a delicious and filling brunch, we headed north to Carleen and Doug's lake cottage. But the first stop was Winnipeg Beach, about 1 hour north, on, get this, Lake Winnipeg. We separated for the drive, with Doug, Norbert and the dogs in one car, and Carleen and I in the other.
Lovely well-tended grounds, and a nice beach.
From there we drove north to Arnes, and the Cooke's cottage. A nice comfortable place.
Later in the afternoon, we drove down to Gimli, also on the lake. It was founded in 1875 by Icelandic imigrants, and Doug's foreears arrived 2 years later, also from Iceland. The word Gimli means "where the favored live",
Our first stop there was Tergesens, "An ecletic collection of clothing, footwear, books and gifts in a turn-of-the-century family store. Unique Always. Est. 1899", and absolutely fascinating.
The town has a long pier, with the Gimli Seawall painted with scenes of local history, wildlife, and daily life.
We had dinner at Seagulls Restaurant before heading on to the Viking -- in the next posting!
