Fla. Panhandle January 2017 - Wakulla Springs 1

Monday, January 16. Our vacation started a day early. We had such a very early flight that we decided to spend the night in a hotel near the airport. The Mercure Hotel Düsseldorf-Rätingen had a nice offer, with parking for our entire time included, so we took that. The room was tiny, with barely room to walk, but adequate for one (short) night. We could have eaten at the hotel but didn't feel like paying €15 for a hamburger, so we walked across the parking lot to McDonalds, where we had a very unsatisfactory meal. Early to bed.

Tuesday, January 17. And up EARLY, as the shuttle was to pick us up at 4:30. Ugh. But we made it, got checked in to the flight in no time flat -- there are some advantages to such an early flight! We flew to Amsterdam where we boarded our flight to Atlanta, from there on to a flight to Jacksonville. Picked up our rental car and since it was already nearing 7 pm., we spent the night at our "go-to" hotel there, the Jacksonville Aiport Days Inn. We walked across the parking lot (seem to do that a lot, don't we!) to a mini-market in the gas station and bought beer, Fritos and water, the necessities of life. Early to bed again, thanks to jet lag.

Wednesday, January 18. Up early yet again, but that is normal. Breakfast at the hotel and then quickly asking the Navi/GPS where to go.

Then a quick stop at Wal-Mart for real food and drink and picnic supplies, and we were ready to head west!

We drove about three hours west. The weather started out lovely but quickly became foggy.

Fortunately we found the right vehicle to follow!

We then arrived at Wakulla Springs State Park. Pronounced, by the way, WHACK-oo-la.

We paid $6 entry fee and then $8 per person for a 45-minute boat trip. Worth every penny! We love this kind of park and boat trip!

Lots of beautiful scenery.

And the birds!!!!

Turtles, too.

And of course lots of these lovelies:

This is without doubt my favourite photo -- doesn't the moss-draped tree look like some sort of mystical being?
